Engineering across applications

We tailor our approach to each application, supporting programmes from concept and design through to prototyping, testing, and low-volume manufacturing.

  • System design and integration

We design and integrate electric systems around each application’s performance, packaging and operating requirements.

  • Battery systems

We design, assemble and test battery modules, packs and power systems across different cell chemistries and formats.

  • Motors, inverters and electronics

We design and integrate electric machines and inverters. We also develop electronics for battery management, vehicle control and power distribution, and integrate gearboxes into complete powertrains.

  • Prototype, test and validation

We build prototypes and test components, and complete systems. Our capabilities include powertrain testing, simulation, hardware-in-the-loop, and environmental testing.

  • Low-volume manufacturing

We manufacture one-off and low-volume systems, supporting programmes from prototype through to production.

Our work

Our work spans automotive and mobility, defence, cycling and elite sport, and we've worked with organisations including Triumph, Lotus, Aston Martin, Brompton, BAE Systems, Thales, General Dynamics and Paralympics GB.

  • Mining

We developed and integrated a 1.4 MWh battery system for Roadrunner, Fortescue’s 240-tonne battery-electric haul truck prototype. It can fast-charge in 30 minutes and recover energy through regenerative braking on downhill runs.

  • Motorsport

Since 2013 (as Williams Advanced Engineering), Fortescue Zero has been the supplier of choice to the Motorsport industry for high performance batteries, electrified powertrain and fast charging solutions, as well as numerous other performance enhancing technologies. In this time we've supplied series such as Formula 1, Formula E, Sportscars (LMP1 & LMDh), Extreme E & H and ETCR.

  • Automotive

Williams Advanced Engineering was formed around the Jaguar C-X75 hybrid hypercar project, and since that time has worked with many mainstream and niche automotive manufacturers on a diverse range of projects from ground-up vehicle to design to specific performance enhancements.

  • Defence

We took a defence aerospace programme from digital concept to prototype on test in 16 weeks, bringing engineering and prototype manufacture together around demanding technical and operational requirements.

  • Marine

We developed the high-voltage battery system to power the Magic Carpet E- a 30-metre supermaxi racing yacht, with all the associated engineering challenges of delivering performance on a high-speed sailing platform. We optimised the integration of a 101 kWh battery pack within the at the early stages of the yacht’s hull design and construction. The battery was designed and tested for the marine environment including watertightness to IP68.
