With the maritime industry responsible for over 80% of global trade, and assets having a trading lifetime of 25 - 30 years, strong decarbonisation measures must start now.
Fortescue has committed to eliminate fossil fuels with a target to achieve Real Zero terrestrial emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030, without carbon offsets. Shipping remains a major challenge, with our vessels contributing 3.04 million tonnes of CO2-eq in FY23, including 9% from its own fleet and 91% from contracted tonnage.

Exploring Green Ammonia as Marine Fuel
In March 2021, Fortescue founded its marine division, tasked with decarbonising the shipping industry by exploring green ammonia as marine fuel.
In a collaborative effort with leading maritime engineers and supported by the Maritime Port Authority of Singapore, We spent two years developing the Fortescue Green Pioneer.
This 75-metre vessel is an ammonia dual-fuel ship, showcasing a significant technological breakthrough.
Charting the course to sustainable shipping
The Green Pioneer proves that safe, technical and operational solutions for ammonia fuelled vessels exist now, kickstarting the development of a maritime ammonia fuel market. Fortescue is committed to driving the decarbonisation of shipping, as demonstrated by the Green Pioneer’s showcase at COP28 in Dubai, and Singapore Maritime Week.
